MASS HOUSING RELOADED

This research project deals with the regeneration of a large housing complex in Seoul, South Korea. The contemporary South Korean landscape is characterised by a massive display of modern apartment complexes called tanji. Nowadays, modern apartment buildings make up over 50% of the urban housing stock in South Korea. Many of them are currently facing numerous problems.

The construction of new housing typologies in place of the existing degraded housing stock would imply a vast tabula rasa development alongside its connected social and environmental issues. Instead, by re-thinking the future of mass housing through a remodelling process, new challenges and needs will be addressed while preserving and reusing a building typology which blends into the history of modern urban development in South Korea.
